In his 2013 State of the Union address, President Obama declared, “We must all do our part to make sure our God-given rights are protected here at home. That includes our most fundamental right as citizens: the right to vote."
The president should be applauded for raising this issue. However, the decision on voting rights rests with state legislatures, and states are moving in widely varying directions when considering the rights of voters.
The Rachel Maddow Show takes on the plan that Republicans in the Pennsylvania legislature are pushing to change how the state allocates its Electoral College votes, comparing them to the famous and hilarious Honey Badger Youtube video narrated by Randall.
Democracy and the desire of the voters be damned, national Republicans are looking to state legislatures to manipulate how these states award their Electoral College votes to determine who wins the presidency in 2016 and beyond. The National Journal reports that "senior Republicans say they will try to leverage their party's [legislative] majorities in Democratic-leaning states in an effort to end the winner-take-all system of awarding electoral votes. Instead, bills that will be introduced in several Democratic states would award electoral votes on a proportional basis."
