In 2010, on opposite sides of the United States, the Maine and California electorates had two very different reactions to the sluggish economy at the time. California voters returned Democrat Jerry Brown to the governor’s office and increased the number of Democrats in their legislature. In Maine, on the other hand, voters selected tea-party backed Republican Paul LePage as their governor and handed the reins of power in the legislature to Republicans who promised to rubber-stamp his agenda.
