A rundown of some of the most important Tuesday night victories you haven’t heard about yet.
State and local Democrats swept to victory in this week’s elections. While top-of-ticket candidates like Virginia’s Abigail Spanberger and New York’s Zohran Mamdani notched historic wins, Democrats down ballot flipped over a dozen seats blue and won majority-deciding races across the country.
In Virginia, Democrats flipped 13 House of Delegates seats blue, establishing the chamber’s largest Democratic majority in nearly 40 years. This earthquake election was no accident. The DLCC and our partners have been working in Virginia, election after election, to build a durable and historic blue majority. In just a single decade, we were able to take Virginia House Democrats from a near superminority to a near supermajority.
Up the coast in New Jersey, Democrats won a hard-fought victory, not just for Governor-Elect Mikie Sherrill, but for the state Assembly, winning the most seats in 50 years and establishing a new Democratic supermajority. The DLCC employed a data-driven strategy to allocate resources to the 12 candidates in the most competitive races, and all 12 won.
Nearly half the country is represented by a Democratic state legislative majority fighting for their rights.
Democrats can only win if we compete, which is why the DLCC isn’t afraid to take the fight to deep-red states. After a judge threw out Mississippi’s legislative maps for being racially discriminatory, the DLCC harnessed the opportunity to pick up three new seats. Democrats were able to break the GOP’s supermajority in the Mississippi Senate, the sixth GOP supermajority broken by the DLCC in the last two years alone.
So far in 2025, the DLCC flipped 9 Trump districts blue, from Iowa to Virginia.
The DLCC was also bolstered special elections from Washington to Minnesota, where Democrats succeeded in defending their one-seat Senate majority. This year alone, the DLCC has won majority-deciding special elections in five chambers. There are already over two dozen special elections scheduled for 2026, including majority-deciding races in Michigan and Pennsylvania, which are at the top of the DLCC’s target map.
Early in the year, the DLCC identified the Pennsylvania State Supreme Court retention races as key opportunities to help protect voting rights, fair maps, and reproductive freedom. We invested six figures that helped all three Democratic justices on the ballot retain their seats. This win helps set the tone for 2026, when our top priority is defending Democrats’ one-seat majority in the Pennsylvania House.
And finally, the monumental victory of Prop 50 in California, allowing Democrats to counter the GOP’s blatant power grabs. That ballot measure was made possible by the swift work of California’s Democratic majority in the legislature, which moved quickly to counter the harm caused by Texas’s map rigging. The DLCC has called on blue states to counter the GOP’s attacks on redistricting and is leading the charge to create more Democratic majorities that can even the playing field.
Our wins could not come at a more crucial time. The center of gravity for serious governance has shifted from Washington, DC, to state legislatures. This is where the decisions most impacting people’s everyday lives are being made.
Democrats have exponential momentum heading into the 2026 midterms, when voters will weigh in on the balance of power in 88 chambers across 46 states, including nine tightly contested chambers on the DLCC’s Target Map. We’re already gearing up for the fight: recruiting candidates, hiring staffers, and building out fundraising programs. The time to get involved is now.
