Democrats need a strong foundation in the states to win back power at all levels of government, and the next big opportunity to make progress is THIS November in Virginia’s state legislature. If we want to pull our country back from the brink and rebuild, we must protect and expand our majority in the Virginia House of Delegates and make sure that Democrats run winning campaigns up and down the ballot. The importance of this year’s election cannot be overstated as it will set the tone and momentum heading into 2026, when multiple other state legislative majorities will also be on the line.
The Stakes
Building and protecting Democratic power in battleground states like Virginia is the best way to defend against the chaotic extremism of Trump and his allies. As Donald Trump wrecks the economy and Elon Musk takes a chainsaw to programs supporting Americans’ basic needs, Virginia is being hit especially hard. Tariffs are already forcing production and shipping facilities to lay off employees while Elon Musk’s DOGE cuts have left thousands of federal workers jobless and veterans who rely on the VA without adequate access to health care. With new devastating policies coming out of Washington D.C. every day and a right-wing governor obstructing progress, the November 2025 election will be a watershed moment for protecting the future of the commonwealth from runaway extremism while also strengthening the firewall of blue state legislatures that collectively protect millions of Americans.
Key Races
This cycle, Virginia Democrats are putting up candidates in nearly every district to help protect the House’s one-seat majority. Meanwhile, the Virginia GOP is facing recruitment failures and several retirements in the chamber as the MAGA brand becomes increasingly toxic. The state’s elections in November will be one of the first major tests of that brand on a national stage, and from past elections, we know many districts will be decided on the slimmest margins. The DLCC has identified what will likely be some of the most competitive races of the November elections, and is throwing the support of its Spotlight program behind them to bring national attention and resources to these key districts.
Protecting Incumbents
Earlier this year, the DLCC announced support for four House races featuring Democratic incumbents who helped flip the Virginia House by winning extremely competitive races in 2023. Last election, we won the House by just 975 votes, so it is critical that Democrats rally behind and reelect these leaders to ensure we don’t lose the hard-won progress they fought for.
Expanding The Majority
In the upcoming elections in Virginia, Democrats also have the opportunity to go on offense and expand our majority. That’s why the DLCC is also Spotlighting four candidates who are returning to the ballot after running strong campaigns, including three who came within hundreds of votes of winning in 2023.
