Ohio House Democrats win most power since the 2010 Red Wave, secure veto power for incoming Governor Amy Acton

WASHINGTON — In a stunning victory, Democrats in Ohio have successfully flipped enough House seats to break the supermajority Republicans have controlled since 2013. With this win, we have secured incoming Governor Amy Acton’s veto and won the most Democratic power in Ohio since the 2010 Red Wave. Ohio Republicans have wielded their supermajority power to attack Ohioans’ rights; tonight, Democrats took that lever of power away.

The DLCC understands that building Democratic power in GOP-controlled states like Ohio takes dedicated work over multiple cycles. Picking up seats is part of our continued strategy to chip away at deeply entrenched Republican power in state legislatures. Nationwide, it is a record-breaking night for Democrats, and gaining ground in Ohio is pivotal as we look to 2028 and beyond.

Ohio Democrats broke the Republican House supermajority for the first time since 2012, and ended the trifecta by electing Governor Amy Acton, who will have her veto power protected thanks to DLCC’s decisive wins in the state legislature.
