The “50 Days Out – Down-Ballot Races to Watch” memo outlines the most competitive majority-making races, races where abortion and democracy will be decided, and more

WASHINGTON —  Today, the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee unveiled a new memo outlining the most important races to watch at the state legislative level with just 50 days left until Election Day. With the state primary season now complete, our new memo details the current balance of power in target states and which competitive races will decide legislative majorities in key battleground states. The memo also highlights races where top issues like abortion and democracy are on the line, as well as compelling young candidates who are the future of the Democratic Party.

In addition to top majority-making races, the memo includes a breakdown of the balance of power in target states, the reproductive freedom champions who are on the frontlines of fighting GOP attacks on abortion access, the democracy defenders who are running against Republicans who have led the assault on our democracy, and the young leaders under 40 years old who are moving our communities forward with an eye toward tackling gun violence and climate change.

State legislatures are shaping the most important issues of our time, and these races will have serious impacts on the landscape of rights for millions of Americans. The Down-Ballot Races to Watch memo is based on DLCC’s Spotlight program, which identifies and supports candidates running in key races for state legislatures. This cycle, the DLCC is spotlighting over 180 candidates in red and blue states alike. The landscape of opportunities this year has never been clearer, and the DLCC has finalized our Spotlight Races in the most competitive target states for this November.

Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Heather Williams issued the following statement:

“With Election Day just 50 days away, the DLCC is Spotlighting the most important races to watch this cycle. Our new memo highlights races that will determine the balance of power in key states and set the larger landscape of rights and democracy in our country. The DLCC is responsible for setting the national agenda at the state level and these races represent critical opportunities to build Democratic power in consequential battlegrounds.

“As we near the most consequential election of our lifetimes, we must be clear-eyed about the threats we face and the strategy and resources needed to prevent a Republican takeover of the states. These state legislative races will not only shape the rights of millions of Americans now, but also lay the groundwork for what’s possible as we build Democratic power through the end of the decade. State legislatures are at the forefront of shaping and implementing the national agenda of the Democratic Party, and this year we have a critical opportunity to finally make that happen.”

The DLCC is the official arm of the Democratic Party with the sole mission of building Democratic power in the states and setting the national agenda at the state level. Over the last decade, we have fought cycle-over-cycle to gain a dozen new legislative chamber majorities and we are leading the effort to bring national attention and investment to our ballot level. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and have the closest connections to Americans’ day-to-day lives. From protecting fundamental freedoms and voting rights to growing the middle class, the DLCC and state legislators are moving the Democratic agenda forward and shaping the future of this country.
