WASHINGTON — New Mexico Democrats just retained control of the House. Republicans inundated the state with over $13 million in spending but still fell short of the majority. State Democratic candidates ran on their strong track record and rebuffed MAGA GOP’s hate and extremism on their way to a resounding victory. Keeping the House in Democratic hands will ensure New Mexico continues to lower health care costs and strengthen public education from pre-K to college.
Democrats have also secured a crucial victory for Governor Lujan Grisham, and together, this Democratic trifecta will continue expanding access to pre-K and higher education and cutting costs for families.
“New Mexico knows that their communities are stronger under Democratic leadership,” said DLCC President Jessica Post. “After Democrats defended reproductive freedom, expanded tuition-free college and access to early childhood education, and sent relief directly to individuals and families, voters from all across the state once again trusted state Democrats to build a better future for New Mexico. This rebuke of the MAGA agenda let the Republican Party know loud and clear that their extremism has no place in New Mexico. Democrats are ready to get back to work addressing the issues that matter most to the people of New Mexico and moving the state forward.”
New Mexico was a crucial target in the DLCC’s Path to The Majority strategy to protect Democratic power and make a play at vulnerable GOP majorities. The DLCC invested over $435,000 in New Mexico this cycle, helping state partners lay the groundwork for strong campaigns across the state. The DLCC’s IE arm spent to defend the New Mexico House, which included mail, digital, and radio ads. Meanwhile, New Mexico Republicans were too busy attempting to undercut public education, desperately use racist attacks, and appease former President Trump rather than working to address the issues that matter to everyday families.
The DLCC is the official Democratic Party committee dedicated to winning America’s state legislatures. This cycle, the committee raised $50 million to elect state Democrats across the country. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and pass the policies that have the biggest impact on Americans’ day-to-day lives.
