BREAKING: Democrats Defend Maine State Legislature

The Maine House and Senate just broke for Democrats, keeping full control of Maine’s legislature in Democratic hands for another two years. Republicans named Maine as one of its targets this cycle and inundated the state with over $1.5 million in spending. The DLCC identified Maine as a target early last year and worked tirelessly with our state partners to defend this crucial legislature in order to continue protecting abortion access, cutting energy costs, and expanding access to public education for the people of Maine.

“Even with historical headwinds, Democrats prevailed and maintained control of the Maine state legislature,” said DLCC President Jessica Post. “Maine Republicans were defeated at the ballot box, showing that a majority of Maine voters do not stand for the GOP’s agenda of banning abortion, denying election results, and giving tax cuts to the wealthy. Democrats are ready to return to the legislature and continue to pass legislation that will create a better future for Maine.”

Maine was a crucial target in the DLCC’s Path to The Majority strategy to protect Democratic power and make a play at vulnerable GOP majorities. The DLCC invested in Maine this cycle, helping state partners lay the groundwork for strong campaigns across the state. The DLCC’s IE arm made key investments to protect this state legislature, which included mail and digital ads.

The DLCC is the official Democratic Party committee dedicated to winning America’s state legislatures. This cycle, the committee raised $50 million at its fastest pace ever to elect state Democrats across the country. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and pass the policies that have the biggest impact on Americans’ day-to-day lives.
