WASHINGTON — The Minnesota House and Senate just broke for Democrats, swinging control of Minnesota’s full legislature for DLFers in a shocking upset. Republicans named Minnesota as one of its key targets this cycle and inundated the state with over $8.3 million in spending. Despite their efforts, Democrats protected their majority in the House and flipped the Senate. State DFL candidates ran on their strong track record and rejected the MAGA GOP’s hate and extremism on their way to a resounding victory.
DFLers have also secured a Democratic trifecta for the first time in almost a decade, delivering a crucial victory for Governor Walz and his ability to continue strengthening Minnesota’s economy and protecting the reproductive rights of everyday Minnesotans.
This key DFL victory will not only protect reproductive care, bolster public education, and cut costs for working families but will protect Minnesota’s election system from GOP election deniers, MAGA conspiracy theories, and other extremists.
“After spending their tenure attempting to gut public education, derailing progress towards a robust green economy, and taking a sharp turn towards extremism, Minnesota Republicans just got a long overdue wake-up call,” said DLCC President Jessica Post. “Voters from all across the state came out in droves for state DFLers, letting the Republican Party know loud and clear that MAGA extremism has no place in Minnesota. The new legislative majority is ready to tackle the issues that matter most to the people of Minnesota and build a safer, more affordable future.”
Minnesota was a crucial target in the DLCC’s Path to The Majority strategy to protect Democratic power and make a play at vulnerable GOP majorities. The DLCC invested over $3.5 million in Minnesota this cycle, helping state partners lay the groundwork for strong campaigns across the state. The DLCC’s IE arm spent heavily to win control of the Minnesota legislature, which included mail and digital ads. Meanwhile, Minnesota Republicans were too rather than working to address the issues that matter to everyday Minnesotans.
The DLCC is the official Democratic Party committee dedicated to winning America’s state legislatures. This cycle, the committee raised $50 million to elect state Democrats across the country. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and pass the policies that have the biggest impact on Americans’ day-to-day lives.
