With 80 seats projected, Democrats will have their largest caucus in the Georgia House in two decades.
WASHINGTON—Democrats have officially gained enough seats in the Georgia House to bring the chamber to its closest margin in two decades. This win marks the 5th consecutive election cycle of gains for the DLCC and is an important progress point in our multi-cycle strategy to shift the balance of power in Georgia.
Georgia was on DLCC’s target map this year and we worked throughout the cycle to plan for and build a winning operation. The Peach State has a deeply rooted history of GOP-backed voter suppression and racial gerrymandering, but Democrats are now in the strongest position yet to build long-term Democratic power and challenge Republicans’ legislative stronghold.
Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Heather Williams issued the following statement:
“We have been working with our partners and allies in Georgia for years to chip away at Republicans’ stronghold in the legislature and our wins this year secured a new milestone in our strategy to build Democratic power in this rapidly-changing state. Georgia Democrats will continue the fight for a brighter future where democracy and fundamental freedoms are protected. We know that no majority is won in a single cycle – Democrats’ victories this year put us that much closer to eventually securing a new Democratic majority. Change in Georgia is coming and the DLCC will remain partners with our allies in the state until Georgians have the representation they deserve.”
The DLCC is the official arm of the Democratic Party with the sole mission of building Democratic power in the states and setting the national agenda at the state level. Over the last decade, we have fought cycle-over-cycle to gain a dozen new legislative chamber majorities and we are leading the effort to bring national attention and investment to our ballot level. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and have the closest connections to Americans’ day-to-day lives. From protecting fundamental freedoms and voting rights to growing the middle class, the DLCC and state legislators are moving the Democratic agenda forward and shaping the future of this country.
