Trump’s MAGA allies in the states remain positioned to undermine democracy and promote election conspiracies without Democratic power in state legislatures
WASHINGTON — Today, the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee unveiled a new memo highlighting the importance of state legislatures in upholding our democracy and ensuring elections are protected. In 2020, statehouses were launching pads for the movement to challenge election results – GOP state legislators colluded with insurrectionists, promoted Trump’s Big Lie, served as fake electors, and sponsored bills to undermine election results. As Trump signals to his MAGA state allies to once again challenge the election if he loses, the DLCC is sounding the alarm on insurrectionist candidates and making democracy a core closing message.

Across the country, control of state legislative chambers – and whether elections are protected or undermined – could come down to a single seat or a few hundred votes this year. That’s especially true in battleground states that witnessed some of the most intense insurrection activity in 2020 and 2021, including Pennsylvania, Arizona, and Michigan. Electing Democrats to state legislatures across the country is the strongest path to protect our democracy not just in 2024 – but for years, decades, and centuries to come.
Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Heather Williams issued the following statement:
“As we approach the first presidential election since the events of January 6th, 2021, state legislatures remain the building blocks of American democracy. In 2020, MAGA allies in the states were instrumental to Trump’s plot to overturn the elections – from helping stage local protests to sponsoring legislation to challenge election results. Unfortunately, Republican extremists in the states have already proven their willingness to go along with Donald Trump’s lies – the only way to stop them is to defeat them at the ballot box by electing Democratic defenders of democracy all the way down the ticket. Legislative control in key battleground states could come down to just hundreds of votes this year, which will in turn decide whether our elections and democracy prevail.”
