WASHINGTON — In response to Donald Trump announcing his run for president in 2024, DLCC President Jessica Post released the following statement:
“MAGA Republican lawmakers moved the insurrection from the U.S. Capitol to statehouses all across the country with the intention of sabotaging elections and putting up barriers to the ballot box. Trump’s presidential announcement was filled with nothing but dangerous lies that should alarm every American across the political spectrum. Democratic victories in statehouses across the country will protect the path to the presidency, but we cannot be complacent. Donald Trump’s grip on the Republican Party extends all the way down ballot.
“The DLCC has been tracking MAGA extremists at the state legislative level of the ballot — and the threat to our democracy isn’t just about one individual. It’s about the hundreds of Republican lawmakers who subscribe to Trump’s ideology and are working to sabotage future elections. This midterm, the DLCC helped state Democrats defeat nearly a dozen insurrectionists vying for state legislatures and another several dozen election deniers. Our victories in targeted states helped us defend and expand majorities representing at least 50 electoral college votes. But we cannot let up — in 2024 and beyond, we must focus on shoring up and expanding Democratic power in the states to truly protect our democracy.”
The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee was the first and only entity committed to identifying, tracking, and condemning the hundreds of Republican state lawmakers who aided and abetted Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election.
