WASHINGTON — The Senate Judiciary Committee today released a report naming Pennsylvania Republican Senator Doug Mastriano as having “a lead role” in the attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. The report finds that Mastriano has “notable” connections to January 6th, used his position of authority to push widely-debunked and conspiracy-based theories, and pressured acting U.S. Principal Associate Deputy Attorney General Richard Donoghue to investigate Pennsylvania’s 2020 presidential election results. Mastriano also participated in the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol and spent thousands of dollars to bus people to Donald Trump’s rally that day, helping to create an environment that led to violence, multiple deaths, and an attack on our country.

Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Jessica Post said: “This report is further proof of what we’ve already known for months: Senator Doug Mastriano is a direct threat to our democracy and played a lead role in the attack on our country. Not only has he spewed baseless lies for months and sowed the seeds of distrust about the 2020 election, now we have concrete proof that he used his position of authority to pressure the Justice Department to investigate the election results. He will keep sinking to new lows in order to win the affection of Donald Trump and his conspiracy-loving base. Doug Mastriano must resign immediately. He is a danger to our democracy and the future of our country. It’s high time that Pennsylvania Republicans stop following his lead, drop their dangerous sham election review, and end these senseless efforts to overturn the will of the voters.”

Nine months ago today, the DLCC called on Republican Senator Doug Mastriano to resign from office due to his role in the January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Senate President Pro Tempore Jake Corman has rebuffed calls for Mastriano to resign, shrugging off his participation at the insurrection. Since the election, Mastriano has consistently pushed widely-debunked conspiracy theories and scam election reviews in Pennsylvania and across the country. Rather than denouncing Mastriano for his shameful role in the attack on our nation, Pennsylvania Republicans are following his lead and performing their own sham election review.
