WASHINGTON — Judge Janet Protasiewicz won her election to the Wisconsin Supreme Court, fending off far-right MAGA extremist Dan Kelly, in a huge win for democracy, fairness, and the rule of law. The stakes could not be higher: from decisions on reproductive freedom to legislative maps, this election could change the face of Wisconsin politics for years to come. The nonprofit affiliate of the DLCC, the State Democracy Action Fund, spent six figures to get out the vote in this important election. Interim DLCC President Heather Williams released the following statement:
“For far too long, voters in Wisconsin have been disenfranchised by GOP gerrymandering that takes away their voices and a conservative state Supreme Court unwilling to do anything to fix it. With Judge Janet Protasiewicz’s victory tonight, that era could finally be over.
“The DLCC is targeting both chambers in Wisconsin this cycle to block supermajorities and protect Democratic Governor Tony Evers’ veto power. But the only reason that the GOP is even within reach of a supermajority is because of rigged GOP maps that prevent Democrats from gaining a majority, even in a state where Democrats often win statewide. With a fair court, challenges to that rigged map could mean that Democrats have a shot at an outright majority in the legislature. The DLCC congratulates Judge Protasiewicz on this consequential victory and will continue to work to expand Democratic power in Wisconsin.”
The DLCC is the official Democratic Party committee dedicated to winning America’s state legislatures. Last year, the DLCC defied the odds by not losing any state legislative majorities, flipping four key chambers, and creating four new Democratic trifectas – the best midterm year for the party in power since at least 1934. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and pass the policies that have the biggest impact on Americans’ day-to-day lives.
