Delaware Democrats Expand Majorities in State Senate and House

WASHINGTON — The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee and Delaware Democrats have flipped a seat from red to blue in the state Senate, solidifying a Democratic majority in the chamber and setting margins at 12D – 9R. In the state House, Delaware Democrats also picked up a seat, expanding their supermajority and setting the margins at 26D – 15R.

“Congratulations to Delaware Senate Democrats and DLCC Vice Chair and House Majority Leader Val Longhurst!” said DLCC Executive Director Jessica Post. “Delaware has been a leader in enacting policies that expand health care, promote gun safety, and safeguard the rights of all Delawareans. Their Democratic trifecta will continue to play a crucial role in pushing back against the Trump administration’s extremist agenda. With Democrats’ victories tonight, they can continue to move the First State forward.”

Tonight’s victories come after the DLCC worked alongside Delaware Senate Democrats to elect Stephanie Hansen to the state Senate in a critical special election in 2017. Delaware Democrats ran more than twice as many women candidates as Republicans, and four times as many candidates of color, reflecting Democrats’ commitment to changing the faces of state power in state legislatures nationwide.

This year Democrats ran over 5,300 candidates – the most candidates for state legislatures since 1982. Nearly half of those candidates are women, and more than 1,100 are candidates of color. The DLCC knows that when Democrats hold the majority in state legislatures, more policies are passed into law that help all Americans. The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee is the only organization exclusively committed to electing Democrats to state legislatures all over the country and winning Democratic control of chambers. For over two decades, the DLCC has been working with state legislative leaders to invest strategically in state programs and rebuild the Democratic Party from the ground up. This cycle, the DLCC held 40 trainings with more than 800 candidates and staff to prepare state Democrats for success. With the help of the DLCC, state Democrats are leading the resistance against the Trump administration’s extremist policies while moving our nation forward one state at a time.
