WASHINGTON — Today, North Carolina lawmakers will convene for the 2024 legislative session, during which Democrats will lead the fight to defend and fund our public schools, protect reproductive freedoms, and fight for voting rights. The Democratic minority will continue to work on the frontlines to combat the extremism of GOP supermajorities, who have wielded their supermajority power to override Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper’s veto and attack fundamental freedoms including pushing through an unpopular abortion ban, voter suppression measures, and laws attacking the LGBTQ+ community.
A reminder: Democrats are just a single seat away in each chamber from breaking the dangerous Republican supermajorities.
Breaking the Republican supermajority and defending a Democratic Governor’s veto in North Carolina is a priority for the DLCC in 2024. Last month, the DLCC unveiled our 14 Spotlight candidates which represent our strongest opportunities to chip away at Republican power. The DLCC has already made battleground investments in North Carolina to achieve this goal. To restore balance in the state and ensure every North Carolinian has their voice heard, the DLCC is gearing up to flip as many seats as possible and end the gerrymandered supermajority once and for all.
