Democrats’ firewall in the states remains strong ahead of more special elections and contests for the Virginia House of Delegates in 2025

WASHINGTON—Last night, DLCC Spotlight candidates JJ Singh and Del. Kannan Srinivasan won two of the first special elections of the year in majority-making special elections for both the Virginia House of Delegates and Senate. Democrats overperformed in races to retain both chambers’ one-seat majorities and will enter the 2025 legislative sessions with a strengthened Democratic firewall in the states. Robust Democratic power in the states is crucial as the GOP will soon take full control of the federal government and likely relegate key powers to the states.

In November, the DLCC will again compete for control of the House of Delegates when the full chamber is on the ballot. The DLCC’s six-figure investment announced last month and our wins last night give us the advantage as we mobilize all year to protect Democratic power in this crucial chamber.
