DLCC and Maine Senate Democrats Flip State Senate From Red to Blue
Democrats have a new trifecta of power in the state

WASHINGTON — The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) and Maine Senate Democrats have flipped the Maine Senate from red to blue. With Governor-elect Janet Mills’ victory, Maine now has a Democratic trifecta.
“Congratulations to Maine Senate Democrats on flipping the state Senate!” said DLCC Executive Director Jessica Post. “This new Democratic majority will be able to implement Medicaid expansion, reduce the burden of property taxes, and bring new educational and career opportunities to all Mainers. The DLCC invested more than $2 million in the state and worked with the caucus and partners to recruit and train strong candidates and the work paid off – Maine Democrats had candidates running in all 35 Senate seats on the ballot. Democratic supporters knocked on hundreds of thousands of doors to drive voter turnout. The DLCC is thrilled we could help state Democrats regain control of the legislature, and we look forward to seeing Senate Democrats lead the state forward.”
The DLCC relied on its political expertise, in-state partnerships, and state-of-the-art data analytics and modeling tools to create smart strategies to deliver Democratic wins. Democrats’ slate was over 50 percent women, and included more than 30 educators. The DLCC featured on its Spotlight Races page strong candidates like Senators-elect Ned Claxton, a family physician fighting to protect health care and address the opioid crisis, Louis Luchini, a former Maine House Representative who is a champion of fair elections, and Erin Herbig, the former House Majority Leader and a dedicated defender of Maine families.
This year Democrats ran over 5,300 candidates – the most candidates for state legislatures since 1982. Nearly half of those candidates are women, and more than 1,100 are candidates of color. The DLCC knows that when Democrats hold the majority in state legislatures, more policies are passed into law that help all Americans. The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee is the only organization exclusively committed to electing Democrats to state legislatures all over the country and winning Democratic control of chambers. For over two decades, the DLCC has been working with state legislative leaders to invest strategically in state programs and rebuild the Democratic Party from the ground up. This cycle, the DLCC held 40 trainings with more than 800 candidates and staff to prepare state Democrats for success. With the help of the DLCC, state Democrats are leading the resistance against the Trump administration’s extremist policies while moving our nation forward one state at a time.
