DLCC and Michigan Senate Democrats Bust Republicans’ Supermajority in the Senate
Democrats make gains in the state House, break GOP trifecta with Gov.-elect Whitmer’s victory
Democrats make gains in the state House, break GOP trifecta with Gov.-elect Whitmer’s victory
WASHINGTON — The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) and Michigan Senate Democrats have busted Republicans’ supermajority in the state Senate, picking up five seats in the chamber – the highest number of Democratic seat pickups since 1974. In the state House, the DLCC and Michigan House Democrats have gained five seats in the chamber, putting state Democrats within reach of regaining the chamber in 2020.
The new margins stand at 52D – 58R in the state House and 16D – 22R in the state Senate. With Governor-elect Gretchen Whitmer’s victory, Republicans’ trifecta of power in the state has been broken.
“Congratulations to Michigan House and Senate Democrats, Senate Democratic Leader and DLCC Board Member Jim Ananich, and to House Democratic Leader Sam Singh!” said DLCC Executive Director Jessica Post. “With more Democrats in the Michigan legislature, they can defend Medicaid, ensure safe drinking water, and stand up to GOP gerrymandering. The DLCC invested more than $3.1 million in the state toward recruiting strong candidates, running digital ads, TV spots, and other paid communications. We also worked with our in-state allies to use our data modeling to help execute a record-breaking field program that knocked on more than 1.4 million doors this cycle.”
The DLCC also featured on its Spotlight Races page strong candidates like state Senators-elect Winnie Brinks, Sean McCann, and Jeremy Moss, who is the first openly LGBTQ elected member of the Michigan Senate, and Representatives-elect Padma Kupa, Mari Manoogian, and Kara Hope. The DLCC relied on its political expertise, in-state partnerships, and state-of-the-art data analytics and modeling tools to create smart strategies to deliver Democratic wins.
This year Democrats ran over 5,300 candidates – the most candidates for state legislatures since 1982. Nearly half of those candidates are women, and more than 1,100 are candidates of color. The DLCC knows that when Democrats hold the majority in state legislatures, more policies are passed into law that help all Americans. The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee is the only organization exclusively committed to electing Democrats to state legislatures all over the country and winning Democratic control of chambers. For over two decades, the DLCC has been working with state legislative leaders to invest strategically in state programs and rebuild the Democratic Party from the ground up. This cycle, the DLCC held 40 trainings with more than 800 candidates and staff to prepare state Democrats for success. With the help of the DLCC, state Democrats are leading the resistance against the Trump administration’s extremist policies while moving our nation forward one state at a time.
