Last week, the DLCC announced a $48,000 investment ahead of these special elections

WASHINGTON — Today, the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee announced two new Spotlight candidates running to maintain the Democratic majority in the Michigan House through special elections on April 16th. The Michigan House is currently tied 54-54, with two vacancies. Peter Herzberg and Mai Xiong – the DLCC’s latest Spotlight candidates – are running to preserve Democrats’ majority in the chamber. Mai is the daughter of Hmong refugees from Laos and is running to contribute to the wave of progress being made in Michigan on gun safety and reproductive freedom. Peter serves on the Westland City Council and has been instrumental in expanding voting access in his community.

Defending the Democratic trifecta in Michigan is a top priority for the DLCC. Elected in 2022, the trifecta had a banner year of accomplishments in 2023, passing gun safety legislation and making health care more accessible. Maintaining a trifecta in Michigan could come down to a single seat in the House and these close margins show how important single legislative seats can be for determining a majority. Last week, the DLCC announced an investment of $48,000 to defend the Michigan House ahead of these crucial elections. The DLCC knows that we must win these elections to ensure that Speaker Joe Tate remains in charge of the Michigan House and Democrats can continue to make Michigan a shining example of progress. The DLCC is laser-focused on taking advantage of every opportunity to defend and build upon Democratic power in Michigan.

DLCC President Heather Williams issued the following statement:

“The DLCC is thrilled to announce our first 2024 Michigan Spotlight candidates – Mai Xiong and Peter Herzberg – whose races will make or break the Democratic majority in the Michigan House. Winning both special elections will ensure Michigan Democrats can continue to move the state forward and protect fundamental freedoms, which is why the DLCC is all hands on deck to support Mai and Peter. These special elections show how important single legislative elections can be for determining a majority and the DLCC is leaving nothing to chance.

“All eyes should be on Michigan on April 16th as we defend our hard-fought Democratic majority and gear up for competitive races across the country in November.”

The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) is the official Democratic Party committee dedicated to winning America’s state legislatures and building state infrastructure. Over the last decade, we have fought cycle-over-cycle to gain a dozen new legislative chamber majorities and we are leading the effort to bring national attention and investment to our ballot level. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and have the closest connections to Americans’ day-to-day lives. From protecting fundamental freedoms and voting rights to growing the middle class, the DLCC and state legislators are moving the Democratic agenda forward and shaping the future of this country.
