DLCC Announces Additional Races to Watch in 2018
WASHINGTON — With less than 100 days until Election Day, the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) is highlighting additional state Democrats to watch on its Spotlight Races page.
These 37 candidates from 16 states are running to break Republicans’ stranglehold on legislative chambers in states like Arizona and protect Democratic majorities in states like Washington. The DLCC’s spotlight candidates are representative of the American melting pot – made up of educators, veterans, lawyers, small business owners, and others who were inspired to run for elected office in order to fight to correct the damage done by Republican majorities and prevent Trump’s divisive and dangerous agenda from impacting their communities and neighbors.
“The DLCC is proud to stand with our amazing candidates and remains committed to working alongside state Democrats and our progressive allies to keep our winning momentum going and turn Democrats’ enthusiasm into long-lasting electoral change,” said Post. “While Republicans are pushing Trump’s agenda and creating divides rather than proposing solutions to some of our major challenges in communities, Democrats are connecting with what matters most to voters. From gun safety legislation to protecting reproductive health care, to creating jobs and improving public education, state Democrats are stepping up to protect our values. With less than 100 days until November 6 and Democrats only being 17 seats away from flipping eight chambers, the DLCC is confident in our winning strategy and will continue our fight to rebuild the Democratic Party from the ground up.”
With the highest number of Democrats running since 1982, these candidates are just a snapshot of the record-breaking slate of state Democrats running nationwide. In Maine, where Democrats hold a majority in the state House and are only one seat away from flipping the state Senate, Democrats are fielding candidates in every Senate district, and – for the first time ever – over 50 percent of Democrats running for the state House are women. In Kentucky, Democrats are running their highest number of candidates since 2000, and in Ohio, Democrats are putting Republicans on notice and fielding candidates in every single district.

The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee is the only organization exclusively committed to electing Democrats to state legislatures all over the country and winning Democratic control of chambers. For over two decades, the DLCC has been working with state legislative leaders to invest strategically in state programs, which has led to Democrats flipping 44 seats since Trump’s inauguration. The DLCC is building on Democrats’ winning momentum and continues to lay the groundwork for substantial gains in 2018 in statehouses nationwide. State Democrats recently scored critical victories in Missouri, Pennsylvania, New York, New Hampshire, Kentucky, Florida, Minnesota, and elsewhere, while also leading the resistance against the Trump administration’s extremist policies.
