DLCC Announces Spotlight Designation for Two New Hampshire House Special Election Candidates

WASHINGTON — Today, the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee announced two new Spotlight candidates running in special elections in Coös County to serve in the New Hampshire House. Cathleen Fountain is running to represent House district Coös-1, and Edith Tucker is running for House district Coös-6. Cathleen is a Navy veteran running to expand access to health care, protect the environment, and support education. Edith is a former legislator who’s running to support Granite State communities, from bringing economic prosperity to the region to investing in infrastructure and environmental protections.

Breaking the GOP trifecta in New Hampshire is a top priority for the DLCC. Just this year, we’ve won five special elections that have positioned Democrats just three seats away from breaking the GOP majority in the New Hampshire House. These close margins have empowered Democrats in the chamber to stop some of the GOP’s most extreme proposals. However, New Hampshire Republicans continue to bring extreme ideas to the table, most recently with a 15-day abortion ban proposal earlier this week.

Both the New Hampshire House and Senate are on the DLCC’s target map in 2024, and we’re taking every opportunity to build Democratic power and ultimately flip both chambers.

DLCC interim President Heather Williams issued the following statement:

“Coös County would be well served with Cathleen and Edith, two champions fighting for a brighter future for Granite State communities. The razor-thin margins in the New Hampshire House mean every single special election could shift the balance of power and help ultimately flip this chamber. The DLCC will be all-hands-on-deck to build Democratic power in the legislature in the November 2024 elections. New Hampshire Republicans can’t be trusted – most recently proposing an egregious 15-day abortion ban. The stakes for electing Democrats have never been more clear, and we’re proud to support Cathleen and Edith in their bids for the House.”

The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) is the official Democratic Party committee dedicated to winning America’s state legislatures and building state infrastructure. Over the last decade, we have fought cycle-over-cycle to gain a dozen new legislative chamber majorities and we are leading the effort to bring national attention and investment to our ballot level. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and have the closest connections to Americans’ day-to-day lives. From protecting fundamental freedoms and voting rights to growing the middle class, the DLCC and state legislators are moving the Democratic agenda forward and shaping the future of this country.
