WASHINGTON — In response to Michigan Republican Senator Lana Theis’ vile fundraising email that falsely claims Senator Mallory McMorrow wants to “groom and sexualize” kindergartners, the DLCC is calling on the Michigan Republican Party to immediately and unequivocally condemn these outrageous and libelous accusations that echo the worst of QAnon conspiracy theories. Sen. McMorrow also took to the Senate floor today to defend herself and denounce the hypocrisy and hatefulness of Sen. Theis’ views against marginalized communities, like LGBTQ+ kids and people of color.

“It’s clear that Senator Lana Theis is willing to sell her conscience to the highest bidder by fundraising off baseless claims about Senator Mallory McMorrow who continues to stand up for the LGBTQ+ community and people of color,” said DLCC President Jessica Post. “Using kindergartners as political pawns and attempting to profit off QAnon conspiracy theories is a truly pathetic attempt to win a primary. The Michigan Republican Party should be ashamed of their ties to Senator Theis and should immediately and unequivocally condemn her actions and call on her to return any donations from this disgusting fundraising scheme.”

Earlier this week, Sen. Mallory McMorrow joined Sen. Dayna Polehanki and Sen. Rosemary Bayer in walking off the Senate floor in protest of Sen. Theis’ invocation hinting at Republicans’ nationwide movement to ban books and teachings on LGBTQ+ issues, white supremacy, and systemic racism. Senator Theis is in lockstep with the Michigan Senate Republicans who fight over leading the race to the bottom on nearly every issue, and Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey who has made a racist and xenophobic statement about COVID and spread election conspiracy theories.
