DLCC Celebrates Critical Victory In Iowa Special Election
Representative-elect Phil Miller Carries Iowa House Special Election
WASHINGTON, D.C. — After a hard fought campaign, Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee Executive Director Jessica Post congratulated Iowa Democrat Phil Miller on his impressive victory in the special election for Iowa House District 82. Dr. Miller, a veterinarian, won the district with 54% of the vote and will carry on the legacy of late Representative Curt Hanson and fight to protect the rights of working Iowans and their families.
“DLCC is thrilled with tonight’s results and proud of our work with the Miller campaign,” said Post. “DLCC is putting Republicans on notice – tonight’s victory in a district Trump won by 21 points just last fall is a testament to Democrats’ strength in deep red districts, and with Representative-elect Miller in the Iowa House we’re one step closer to regaining the chamber.”
“With the support of the DLCC, Iowa House Democrats were able to run a strong campaign from beginning to end,” said House Democratic Leader Mark Smith. “Having DLCC behind us ensured that we could keep fighting for the constituents of HD-82 up until the last poll closed.”
Dr. Miller’s win marks the second DLCC Spotlight Race victory since its launch last month. Since Trump’s inauguration, Democrats have flipped four legislative seats and have overperformed in almost every legislative special election. State Democrats recently scored a critical victory in New Hampshire with Senator-elect Kevin Cavanaugh’s win and have claimed additional victories in Delaware, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New York, and elsewhere. DLCC looks forward to continuing our support of Democrats in Virginia, New Jersey, Washington, Florida, and beyond as they build on Democrats’ winning momentum heading into 2018 elections.
