DLCC Celebrates Danica Roem’s Monumental Victory in Virginia
Del.-elect Roem was an early addition to DLCC’s Spotlight Races to watch

WASHINGTON — Tonight DLCC Executive Director Jessica Post celebrated Virginia Delegate-elect Danica Roem on her history-making victory tonight in the special election for HD-13.

Roem is the first openly transgender candidate to be elected to any state legislature in the country. A former journalist, Roem defeated entrenched Republican incumbent Bob Marshall and his special interest backers, flipping the traditionally Republican district from red to blue.

“Delegate-elect Danica Roem focused her campaign on the issues that matter most to her future constituents,” said Post. “Advocating for fixing traffic problems, policies to help working families get ahead, and the rights of all Virginians, the DLCC was proud to be a part of her historic campaign through our work with House Democratic Leader David Toscano and the Virginia Democratic caucus. We congratulate her on this critical victory and thank her for her hard work and dedication. We look forward to seeing all she will accomplish in the state legislature.”

With HD-13 in the hands of Democrats and other critical races still to be called, Virginia Democrats are moving closer to their goal of retaking the state’s lower chamber ahead of 2020 redistricting. The DLCC looks forward to continuing our investment and engagement in this important battleground state in 2019 and beyond.
