DLCC Celebrates Democratic Triumphs In Tonight’s Legislative Special Elections
Rep.-elect Jacob Rosecrants and Rep.-elect Charlie St. Clair Flip Open Seats in Red States to Democratic Control, Kathryn Rehner Advances to October Runoff
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Tonight Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee Executive Director Jessica Post congratulated DLCC Spotlight Race candidates Kathryn Rehner, Representative-elect Jacob Rosecrants and Representative-elect Charlie St. Clair. In Mississippi, Rehner secured a spot in the October runoff election where she will have the opportunity to shatter Republicans’ supermajority in the chamber. In Oklahoma, Rosecrants flipped Oklahoma State House District 46, marking Democrats third pickup in the state since the November election. In New Hampshire, St. Clair flipped House District Belknap 9, delivering a fourth 2017 legislative special election win for New Hampshire Democrats.
“The significance of tonight’s achievements by state Democrats cannot be understated,” said Post. “These three seats were in red states carried by Trump in 2016. Our wins tonight send a clear message to Republicans everywhere that no matter how red the district is, you can’t hide from the shadow cast by the Trump administration – the American people will hold you accountable for dangerous and extremist Republican policies at the ballot box. The DLCC is proud of our Spotlight Race candidates and of the efforts we made to support them. Today’s triumphs underscore the resistance happening in states across the country as DLCC and state Democrats build a winning momentum ahead of 2020 redistricting.”
Tonight’s wins are just the latest in a series of Democratic special election victories as DLCC lays the groundwork for substantial gains in 2017 and 2018 in statehouses across the country. After tonight’s wins in New Hampshire and Oklahoma, state Democrats have now flipped six seats and have overperformed in almost every legislative special election since Trump’s inauguration. DLCC and state Democrats recently scored critical victories in Iowa, Delaware, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New York, and elsewhere. DLCC looks forward to continuing our support of Democrats in Virginia, New Jersey, Washington, Florida, and beyond as they build on Democrats’ winning momentum heading into 2018 elections.
