WASHINGTON — The U.S. Supreme Court released a decision today that undermines the Environmental Protection Agency’s ability to regulate greenhouse gas emissions, in turn, restricting the power of the federal government to effectively address the threat of climate change. This decision is the latest in a series of dangerous opinions from the Supreme Court that elevate state legislatures as critical lines of defense on issues like abortion and LGBTQ+ equality. It is also a stark reminder of the lengths conservatives will go to make life more difficult for working Americans.
“Republicans from state legislatures to the conservative Supreme Court are waging an all-out war on the common good of our country,” said DLCC President Jessica Post. “This decision will set us back in the fight against climate change. We must do everything we can to elect Democrats to state legislatures as they continue to pass bold environmental legislation. With all of the blatant attacks on our democracy coming down this session, one thing is clear, Republicans at every level have abandoned Americans, and state legislatures continue to be the frontlines of the biggest issues facing our country.”
Democratic majorities in the states have proven that they will pass bold climate legislation that helps working families. Democrats in Washington, Vermont, Nevada, California, and others are at the forefront of creating innovative policy to fight climate change and invest in our country’s future. While Republicans continue to make life worse, Democrats have clear solutions that benefit everyone.
