WASHINGTON — Last week, Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee interim President Heather Williams and Senior Advisor and President Emerita Jessica Post hit the airwaves to speak about how the DLCC swept the 2023 elections – winning in Virginia, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania while Democrats and activists on the ground also won an important abortion referendum in Ohio. Heather and Jessica conducted several interviews on MSNBC and Fox News to outline how Republican attempts to take away our fundamental freedoms have failed and how the DLCC will continue to use this momentum to win in the states in 2024 – which is already shaping up to be “the year of the states.”
From Heather’s appearance on Lawrence O’Donnell’s The Last Word:
“Voters really understand how critically important their state legislature is to their lives and the stakes. In this case, in Virginia, we were talking a lot about access to reproductive health care and abortion and voters in the state knew that if they went to the polls on Tuesday and woke up on Wednesday and there was Republican control, there would be an abortion ban.”
“We’re ready to take this winning strategy and all the lessons that we’ve learned in Virginia, and move into 2024.”
From Heather’s appearance on Symone:
“You’ve got Republicans in the state who are looking to take away all kinds of rights and it’s really hard to sell a message that ‘we’re looking out for you, we want you to make the best decisions for yourself,’ when they are looking to make decisions that should remain between a person and their doctor, when they’re looking at banning books, when they’re looking at taking away trust in our voting systems. They’re not looking out for what people want and should be able to do in this country, but rather deciding what they should do for them.”
From Heather’s appearance on Yasmin Vossoughian Reports:
“We are going to ensure that we have a clear message to voters that things are getting done in the states, Democrats who are in charge are actually leading for them and not to preserve their own power. That’s what we’re seeing with Republicans across the country. They are ignoring voters, they are ignoring the will of the people, and that is why they’re losing.”
“[The result on Tuesday] really shows how much voters understand that what’s happening in the states matters and that they can use their voice. In an environment where things feel at times frustrating – when you’ve got Republicans who cannot get it together in the House of Representatives – wanting a place where you can really feel like you can take action and be heard is really important. We are absolutely seeing that in the states.”
“It’s been interesting to watch all year. We’ve had special elections across the country and obviously Tuesday’s election where Democrats are overperforming. They are really showing up in these unique voting environments. A state legislative race is not a large race in size but it’s really impactful when you think about the kinds of policies that move through our legislatures and now with the increased focus to save our democracy and ensure that our rights are being protected.”
From Jessica’s appearance on Ayman:
“Part of what we have to do is win up and down the ticket. We know that if we put the appropriate attention and time into winning state legislative races we can work to combat these anti-democratic legislators that we’ve been seeing.”
“The fundamental power in many of these states is in the state legislature… we know that we have to win state legislatures in order to restore democracy in the states.”
From Heather’s appearance on Chris Jansing Reports before the election:
“While we head into tomorrow’s election, Virginians totally understand what’s at stake. We know that there will be an abortion ban, the governor has been crystal clear about that. We also know that what’s at stake is whether or not Virginia becomes the next Florida.”
From Heather’s appearance on Fox News with Rich Edson before the election:
“We have multiple paths to victory, we see multiple routes to get there, and we believe wholeheartedly that this is going to come down to a handful of votes and potentially one seat.”
From Heather’s appearance on Fox News with Rich Edson after the election:
“I don’t think that we’re in a position of having to tie anyone to President Trump because President Trump is the Republican party.”

The DLCC is the official Democratic Party committee dedicated to winning America’s state legislatures. Last year, the DLCC defied the odds by not losing any state legislative majorities, flipping four key chambers, and creating four new Democratic trifectas – the best midterm year for the party in power since at least 1934. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and pass the policies that have the biggest impact on Americans’ day-to-day lives.
