DLCC Holds Key Seat in Battleground State

 

 

WASHINGTON — Tonight in Florida, Senator-elect Lori Berman won the special election for Senate District 31.

 

Berman, a veteran lawmaker with almost a decade of experience in the Florida House, was a featured DLCC Spotlight candidate. She carried the election with about 75% of the vote — about 14 points higher than Hillary Clinton’s vote share in the district in 2016 — keeping this critical Senate seat in Democratic hands.

 

“The DLCC is thrilled to see Senator-elect Lori Berman return to the legislature and continue to serve the people of the Sunshine State,” said DLCC Executive Director Jessica Post. “She is committed to fighting for women’s rights, affordable health care, and quality education. The DLCC’s work alongside Florida Democrats has resulted in the election of three Democratic women to this battleground state’s upper legislative chamber, and we look forward to gaining more ground in 2018 and 2020 elections ahead of critical redistricting.”

Tonight’s win comes on the heels of the DLCC announcing a new record for first quarter fundraising of more than $5 million, with $1 million coming from online donations. The DLCC is on track to spend $35 million this election cycle, and has highlighted some of their state Democratic candidates to know in 2018 at races.dlcc.org.
