Republicans failed to defend their Senate supermajority & lost significant ground in the Assembly, despite marking Wisconsin as a top priority

WASHINGTON—With final results still being counted, Democrats are projected to gain at least 10 seats in the Wisconsin Assembly and 4 seats in the Senate on new fair maps. This was the first election since 2011 that legislative races were held on fair maps, and our top priority this year was to take full advantage of numerous opportunities across the state for Democratic gains.

Gaining ground in Wisconsin on new maps was a key DLCC priority this cycle. Cycle over cycle, the DLCC has been on the frontlines supporting Wisconsin Democrats in their fight to make gains against an aggressive gerrymander that silenced voters for far too long. These victories are crucial milestones in the DLCC’s long-term strategy to shift the balance of power in Wisconsin and lay the groundwork for future gains to eventually put the majority in play.

Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Heather Williams issued the following statement:

“Thanks to fair maps and a smart strategy, the GOP’s stranglehold on Wisconsin’s legislature is coming to an end. Wisconsin represents one of the most compelling success stories of the DLCC’s work to build Democratic power in the face of structural barriers. For years, the DLCC has been on the ground working with in-state partners to resist Republicans’ gerrymandered grip on the legislature. When new maps finally emerged this cycle, the DLCC worked hand-in-hand with our partners and allies in Wisconsin to take full advantage of the opportunity, and today we see the results. Even as Republicans poured millions of dollars into Wisconsin to try to cling to their power, the DLCC’s strategy and focus along with our partners and allies carried the day.

“Our 2024 wins mark just the beginning. Seat by seat, the DLCC is committed to continuing to build and defend Democratic power in the Wisconsin legislature. Republicans have been put on notice: the DLCC is poised to make Wisconsin a future Democratic trifecta.”

The DLCC is the official arm of the Democratic Party with the sole mission of building Democratic power in the states and setting the national agenda at the state level. Over the last decade, we have fought cycle-over-cycle to gain a dozen new legislative chamber majorities and we are leading the effort to bring national attention and investment to our ballot level. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and have the closest connections to Americans’ day-to-day lives. From protecting fundamental freedoms and voting rights to growing the middle class, the DLCC and state legislators are moving the Democratic agenda forward and shaping the future of this country.
