DLCC on North Carolina Legislative Republican’s Extreme Gerrymander

WASHINGTON – Today, North Carolina Republicans released new district maps for their state which are an extreme gerrymander of the state’s legislative districts that will further rob voters of fair representation in the North Carolina General Assembly.

Following other recent and alarming attacks by the North Carolina GOP on voting rights, these new maps are another abuse of power that serve the sole purpose of locking Republicans’ supermajorities into permanent control.

Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee Communications Director Abhi Rahman issued the following statement:

“After drawing new maps in secret and away from public view, North Carolina Republicans have proven once again that they will stop at nothing to rig the system in favor of themselves. Make no mistake, this is a partisan gerrymander, full stop. In 2022, the North Carolina Supreme Court struck down similar maps that were drawn by these same legislators. These maps prove that if Republicans can’t win an election fair and square, they’ll stop at nothing to dilute the power of voters to ensure that they keep their own elected positions.

“The DLCC will continue our work to break the partisan supermajorities in the North Carolina legislature. This isn’t about politics, it’s about the basic right to fair representation. North Carolina remains a priority for us and it’s time for everybody to realize the importance of building state infrastructure in states like North Carolina.”

The DLCC is the official Democratic Party committee dedicated to winning America’s state legislatures. Last year, the DLCC defied the odds by not losing any state legislative majorities, flipping four key chambers, and creating four new Democratic trifectas – the best midterm year for the party in power since at least 1934. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and pass the policies that have the biggest impact on Americans’ day-to-day lives.
