WASHINGTON — After a historic night that saw state Democrats flip both chambers of the Michigan legislature for the first time since the 1980s, deliver a Democratic trifecta in Minnesota for the first time in years, protect Democratic governors’ veto power in Wisconsin and North Carolina, and defend key Democratic majorities in Colorado, Maine, and New Mexico, DLCC President Jessica Post released the following statement:
“Democrats are on track to overcome historic odds defending our majorities in key states and even flipping the legislatures in Minnesota and Michigan. Republicans had everything in their favor: record fundraising and a midterm political environment under a Democratic president, and they have little to show for it. This election should have been a landslide for Republicans — instead Democrats fended off the so-called “red wave” in the states and gained critical ground for the decade ahead.”
With many key races across the country yet to be determined, state Democrats have already delivered the following victories:
- Flipped both chambers of the Michigan legislature for the first time since the 1980s
- Flipped the Minnesota Senate, delivering a Democratic trifecta in Minnesota for the first time in years
- Protected crucial veto power for Democratic Governors Tony Evers in Wisconsin and Roy Cooper in North Carolina, a monumental feat for voting rights and abortion access for millions of Americans
- Defended Democratic majorities Republicans targeted to flip in Colorado, Maine, and New Mexico
The DLCC crafted and implemented its Path to The Majority strategy to protect Democratic power in Colorado, Maine, and New Mexico while making a play for vulnerable GOP majorities in places like Michigan and in the Minnesota House. From early on, the DLCC invested resources across these states, helping state partners lay the groundwork for strong campaigns across the state.
The DLCC is the official Democratic Party committee dedicated to winning America’s state legislatures. This cycle, the committee raised $50 million to elect state Democrats across the country. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and pass the policies that have the biggest impact on Americans’ day-to-day lives.
