WASHINGTON — After S.B.1 was defeated in Congress, Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Jessica Post and the DLCC’s newly formed State Voting Rights Council co-chairs Nevada Assembly Speaker Jason Frierson and Michigan Senate Minority Leader Jim Ananich released the following statement:

“We are disappointed that these vital protections have stalled but we remain hopeful that Congress will pass legislation to protect all Americans against the Republican assault on voting rights. Today’s Senate vote makes it clear that the effort to defend voting rights must continue in the states. State legislatures have the ultimate control over the building blocks of our democracy and we cannot depend on federal legislation alone. We must win these fights in each and every state legislature.

“The best way to save American democracy is by building a Democratic firewall in every state that will loudly and clearly rebuke Republicans working to suppress the vote. So far this year, our incredible lawmakers have stepped up to expand access to the ballot box and fight the wave of voter suppression legislation introduced by Republicans who continue to spread the ‘Big Lie.’ Simply put, the time is now. Democrats across this country need our support in their efforts to defend our elections and our democracy.

“Through the State Voting Rights Council, we’re working with Democratic state legislative leaders across the country to fight back against Republican voter suppression and gerrymandering. Make no mistake, we will use every tool available to stand up for our democracy. The GOP represents the most serious threat to democracy in a generation, and Democrats will do everything in our power to protect Americans’ political freedoms.”
