DLCC Statement on Anniversary of Obergefell v. Hodges

WASHINGTON — Today marks the 10th anniversary of Obergefell v. Hodges, the landmark decision that legalized same-sex marriage across the nation. Obergefell is living proof of the power of the states to serve as beacons of progress that can lead to national milestones. Prior to Obergefell, 37 states had legalized same-sex marriage.

Today, Democratic-led states continue to push for full equality for LGBTQ+ Americans at a time when state Republicans are emboldened under the Trump administration to increase and renew attacks on the LGBTQ+ community.

Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Heather Williams issued the following statement:

“Obergefell was a watershed moment for our country that followed decades of efforts in the states to advance marriage equality. Democratic state legislators continue to work tirelessly every day to protect every American’s civil rights – even in the face of unprecedented and dangerous anti-LGBTQ+ policies that state Republicans and the Trump administration are pushing. Our legislators will continue to show up to protect the most vulnerable among our communities and stand strong for the constitutional protections of fundamental rights, and the DLCC is proud to join them in solidarity.”

The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) is the campaign arm of Democratic state legislatures and leads the national strategy for building power and winning new majorities. Over the last three decades, we have strategized cycle over cycle to win majorities and lead the effort to bring national attention and investment to our ballot level, winning nearly a dozen new chamber majorities over the last decade. Our work has ensured that nearly half of Americans are represented by at least one Democratic majority in their statehouse. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and have the closest connections to Americans’ day-to-day lives. From protecting fundamental freedoms and voting rights to growing the middle class and advancing opportunity, the DLCC and state legislators are moving the Democratic agenda forward and shaping the future of this country.
