The DLCC called for Democratic legislatures to go on offense on redistricting and explore mid-cycle redistricting as Republicans intensify their schemes to rig maps
WASHINGTON — Today, California voters approved new maps to counter Republicans’ blatant power grabs. This follows Governor Gavin Newsom and the California legislature taking decisive action to put this decision before voters in response to Republicans’ egregious efforts to rig the maps in Texas and other states to hold onto their U.S. House majority in 2026 and beyond.
The DLCC continues to lead the national effort to win back state legislative majorities in the run-up to 2030 redistricting. Building power in the states will be critical to protect against Republican gerrymandering schemes and the extreme agenda that raises prices, cuts jobs, and denies health care to working families.
Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Heather Williams issued the following statement:
“The DLCC applauds California voters, state legislative Democrats, and Governor Newsom for taking a stand for democracy and doing their part to put the midterm elections back on a level playing field across the country. The next big step is for us to focus on expanding the number of Democratic state legislative majorities in the midterms, which will have an even larger impact in the battle over redistricting. We will have historic opportunities to expand the number of Democratic majorities next year, and the DLCC remains laser-focused on this goal.”
The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) is the campaign arm of Democratic state legislatures and leads the national strategy for building power and winning new majorities. Over the last three decades, we have strategized cycle over cycle to win majorities and lead the effort to bring national attention and investment to our ballot level, winning nearly a dozen new chamber majorities over the last decade. Our work has ensured that nearly half of Americans are represented by at least one Democratic majority in their statehouse. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and have the closest connections to Americans’ day-to-day lives. From protecting fundamental freedoms and voting rights to growing the middle class and advancing opportunity, the DLCC and state legislators are moving the Democratic agenda forward and shaping the future of this country.
