In response to Texas Republicans’ blatant power grab, the DLCC has called for the party to go on offense on redistricting
WASHINGTON — Texas Republicans just cheated the system overnight, following Trump’s directive to rig the maps to maintain power in 2026 and beyond. Republicans in the states have proven they will not shy away from using their power to subvert voters and democracy, which is why Democratic majorities across the country should continue to keep all options open as they fight GOP extremism, while the party focuses on building and expanding Democratic power in the states.
Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Heather Williams issued the following statement:
“Texas Republicans weren’t bluffing when they laid out their plans to cheat the system, and we need to take all Republicans at their word when they threaten our democracy. The GOP’s actions today pave the way for Republican legislatures from coast to coast to follow suit in undermining the will of the people. Democrats must have a national strategy to fight back. The best shield against these unprecedented attacks on democracy is durable Democratic majorities in our state legislatures that will put the people first. The DLCC stands with Texas Democrats who fought this scheme with all their might, and we will continue to lead in the fight to expand Democratic majorities in statehouses across the country so the party can go on offense on redistricting.”
