DLCC Statement on the Supreme Court Stay on Abortion Pills

WASHINGTON – In response to the Supreme Court stay on the case involving the most widely used abortion drugs in the country, Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee Interim President Heather Williams released the following statement:

“Today’s Supreme Court stay is momentary relief from GOP extremists who have spent every second working to roll back abortion rights since the Dobbs decision came down, but these lawmakers won’t stop now. There is no debating it: the Republican Party will not stop until they have complete control over Americans’ bodies. The reproductive rights of millions of Americans will be won or lost in state legislatures, and our fight is far from over.

“The DLCC and state Democrats’ historic 2022 victories and ongoing wins in the new year have shown that the GOP overplayed their hand and are out of touch with a majority of voters on this issue. As Republicans continue to restrict reproductive freedom, Democratic-led legislatures are protecting abortion access and keeping the government out of personal decision-making.

“To continue defending our fundamental freedoms, the DLCC is leading the charge to protect and expand Democratic power in state legislatures across the country. The fight to enshrine abortion rights is in the states – and there will be dire consequences in 2023 and beyond if Democrats neglect our level of the ballot.”

The DLCC is the official Democratic Party committee dedicated to winning America’s state legislatures. Last year, the DLCC defied the odds by not losing any state legislative majorities, flipping four key chambers, and creating four new Democratic trifectas – the best midterm year for the party in power since at least 1934. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and pass the policies that have the biggest impact on Americans’ day-to-day lives.
