Two sitting Arizona Republican state legislators, out of the hundreds of election deniers in state legislatures, were fake electors trying to overturn the election for Donald Trump
WASHINGTON — Last night, two sitting Republican legislators in Arizona were indicted by a grand jury for falsely certifying that Trump won Arizona in the 2020 election. Arizona GOP Sen. Jake Hoffman and Sen. Anthony Kern were each charged with nine criminal counts including fraudulent schemes and artifices, fraudulent schemes and practices, and conspiracy, and six counts of forgery.
It should go without saying that insurrectionists and those plotting against our democracy have no place in elected office. Republicans’ fake electors scheme to overturn the results of a fair presidential election highlights the stakes of the upcoming elections in November. Arizona Republicans clearly cannot be trusted with our election systems, and their toxic majorities in the legislature must be broken to protect democracy. Democrats are just two seats away from gaining control in each chamber and putting an end to these dangerous attempts to subvert elections.
State legislatures are the most important ballot level shaping the future of democracy, and the DLCC is committed to supporting champions of voting rights and democratic institutions.
Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee Communications Director Abhi Rahman issued the following statement:
“GOP Arizona legislators represent an active threat to democracy that can only be fixed by voting them out in November. The Republican majorities have used their power to pursue wildly extreme legislation that weakens the democracy they were elected to uphold. Arizonans can’t trust MAGA Republicans, and Democrats are only two seats away in each chamber from breaking their power.
“Arizona’s sitting legislators who are fake electors remind us that state legislatures are on the frontlines of defending our democracy. While Democrats actively strengthen our democracy – expanding voting rights and fighting gerrymandering – Republicans have already shown they will try to overturn the election for Trump. Democrats must invest in defending our democracy at the ballot box in November by electing champions of democracy and voting rights.”
