WASHINGTON — Earlier today, DLCC President Heather Williams and DLCC Political Director Jeremy Jansen hosted a press conference to preview the most competitive state legislative battlegrounds and discuss the landscape for Election Day. Chamber control in our target states are expected to be decided by the closest of margins and could hinge on just a handful of votes, which is why the DLCC is focused on getting out the vote and ensuring voters understand their fundamental freedoms are on the line.

DLCC President Heather Williams
- “Every battleground chamber is within razor-thin margins and could be decided by just a handful of votes. Right now, just 12 legislative seats are deciding 6 legislative majorities in the biggest battleground states across the country, and all our polling shows that this election will be incredibly close.”
- “To meet this moment, the DLCC has executed a strategy that we believe gives Democrats the best chances to overcome the challenges at this ballot level. We’ve made earlier and more disciplined investments than ever before to set candidates and campaigns up for success. We’ve also worked to coordinate at an unprecedented level with our partners to fill gaps and back our caucuses in the ways that matter most, including reaching voters in this critical final stretch.”
- “Decisions on fundamental freedoms are happening in the states, and many of the dangers of Project 2025 and Trump’s MAGA agenda will continue to advance through our statehouses no matter the outcome at the top of the ticket. It’s important to keep in mind that regardless of the results this year, state legislatures are becoming more impactful. No matter what happens, we will roll up our sleeves starting November 6th to continue building Democratic power in time for 2030, when redistricting comes around again.”
DLCC Political Director Jeremy Jansen
- “We have much closer margins in these chambers as a result of our historic gains from 2022, which we’re very narrowly focused on defending those majorities. We came into this cycle expecting it to be extremely competitive. And what our data keeps telling us over and over and over again is that it has remained exactly that – very competitive, too close to call. It’s going to come down to the last vote and continuing to push every day until Election Day.”
- “We know that many of our races will be too close to call on Election Night and recounts are common – we don’t expect to know the full landscape of results until days after the election in some chambers.”
- On Democrats’ efforts to flip the New Hampshire House: “They’ve raised a ton of money. Their candidates are really active. They’re knocking on doors. They’re probably knocking on every door in their district, because these districts are so small and they’ve just really had a fantastically concerted effort to make sure that they are communicating their message to every single voter in these districts, and really making things competitive in New Hampshire.”
The DLCC is the official arm of the Democratic Party with the sole mission of building Democratic power in the states and setting the national agenda at the state level. Over the last decade, we have fought cycle-over-cycle to gain a dozen new legislative chamber majorities and we are leading the effort to bring national attention and investment to our ballot level. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and have the closest connections to Americans’ day-to-day lives. From protecting fundamental freedoms and voting rights to growing the middle class, the DLCC and state legislators are moving the Democratic agenda forward and shaping the future of this country.
