WASHINGTON — Donald Trump has endorsed several state legislative candidates and incumbents that present a direct threat to our democracy, many of whom were present at the January 6th insurrection or supported efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. In Michigan, Trump has endorsed candidates that have made pushing the “Big Lie” and overturning the 2020 presidential election central to their platforms — a pathetic attempt to shore up support in a state he lost in case he does run for president in 2024.
“More than a year after the 2020 presidential election, Donald Trump still cannot accept that he lost fair and square,” said DLCC executive director Heather Williams. “Beating the drum of the ‘Big Lie’ is not politics as usual — it’s a direct affront to our democracy and led to the deadly insurrection on January 6th. There is nothing more un-American than supporting the candidacies of those who attacked our country or will actively undermine our elections. The DLCC will continue to hold Republicans accountable for their anti-democratic actions and protect free, fair, and secure elections.”

The DLCC has played a pivotal role in identifying 22 Republican state legislators who participated in the January 6th insurrection and another nearly 600 who promoted “Stop the Steal” rhetoric or signed resolutions, letters or legal briefs calling to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. This group represents more than 15 percent of all 2020 Republican legislators. The DLCC will continue to hold these lawmakers accountable and remind voters that they will undermine our democracy and even attack our country.
