Louisiana Democrats Protect Governor’s Veto

WASHINGTON — The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee is celebrating a huge victory for Louisiana Democrats, who won enough seats to prevent Republicans from gaining a supermajority in the Louisiana House of Representatives.

“Today’s election was a huge victory for Louisiana Democrats who have fought to expand health care, invest in education and create jobs,” said DLCC President Jessica Post. “By protecting Governor John Bel Edwards’s veto power, Democrats can keep moving Louisiana forward, block extreme Republican policies, and fight for fair maps after the 2020 census.”

With Governor John Bel Edwards’ concurrent reelection, Louisiana Democrats have denied Republicans power in a state President Trump carried by almost 20 points in 2016. With Republicans losses in Virginia and Kentucky earlier this month and continued Republican decline in suburban districts across the country, the 2019 elections are an ominous sign for the GOP heading into 2020.

“State election results this year were devastating for Donald Trump and Republicans across the country,” Post said. “Up and down the ballot, the politicians who continue to support Trump and his radical behavior are going to pay a price this November and in 2020.”
