WASHINGTON — Michigan Democrats aren’t wasting any time using their new governing trifecta to improve lives in their state. The legislature moved quickly on a range of issues that are typically stalled in Congress, including repealing right-to-work, enshrining LGBTQ+ protections, passing common sense gun safety reforms in the wake of gun violence in the state, and repealing Michigan’s archaic 1931 abortion ban. After decades of GOP obstruction, Michigan Democrats are working to enact long overdue progress with their newfound power.
“Michigan Democrats campaigned on protecting abortion rights, making an economy that works for everyone, protecting Michigan’s workers, and so much more — and they’re making good on that promise,” interim DLCC President Heather Williams said. “While Republicans continue to embrace MAGA extremism, Democrats are lifting up working families and enshrining fundamental freedoms into law. This Democratic legislation is the direct result of years of hard work and investment by the DLCC and our state partners and is just another example that when Democrats flip state legislatures, they make sweeping, transformative policy change.”
The DLCC is the official Democratic Party committee dedicated to winning America’s state legislatures. Last year, the DLCC defied the odds by not losing any state legislative majorities, flipping four key chambers, and creating four new Democratic trifectas – the best midterm year for the party in power since at least 1934. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and pass the policies that have the biggest impact on Americans’ day-to-day lives.
