NEW: Number of GOP Legislators Linked to Insurrection Climbs to At Least 16

WASHINGTON —  The number of current and former Republican lawmakers with known involvement in last week’s insurrection at the U.S. Capitol has now grown to at least 16. As further reports and footage of armed extremists prepared to kidnap or even execute America’s top political leadership surfaced over the weekend, Republican legislative leaders remained silent on the forces and actors within their own party that initiated this violence.

“There can be no unity without accountability,” said Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Jessica Post. “Every elected official who betrayed our democracy is unfit to represent their communities. We challenge our Republican counterparts to step up for the country they claim to love and join us in upholding the values that make this nation great. If there was any time to put country over party, it is now.”
