In the clearest single-issue choice of this election, Ohio voters side with Democrats.
WASHINGTON – Ohio voters approved a proposed amendment to their state constitution tonight that will guarantee a constitutional right to abortion and other reproductive health care. This landmark vote is a strong rebuke of Republicans’ extreme priorities and reinforces what the DLCC has long known: protecting fundamental freedoms is a winning issue with voters.
DLCC interim President Heather Williams issued the following statement:
“Ohio’s resounding support for this constitutional amendment reaffirms Democratic priorities and sends a strong message to the state GOP that reproductive rights are non-negotiable. Across the country, Republicans are dead-set on restricting fundamental freedoms such as abortion rights while the DLCC is dedicated to putting Democrats in office to protect these rights.”
“While many of our races involve a wide range of important issues, in the clearest single-issue vote of the night, Democrats have won a huge victory.”
As the DLCC applauds Ohio voters for siding with fundamental freedoms, the fight for reproductive rights is far from over and this will remain a critical issue in the election cycle ahead. As the official party committee for electing Democrats to state legislatures, the DLCC will be focused on bringing increased attention and resources to why the state and local levels of the ballot are so critical for securing progress.
The DLCC is the official Democratic Party committee dedicated to winning America’s state legislatures. Last year, the DLCC defied the odds by not losing any state legislative majorities, flipping four key chambers, and creating four new Democratic trifectas – the best midterm year for the party in power since at least 1934. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and pass the policies that have the biggest impact on Americans’ day-to-day lives.
