The DLCC recently launched DemsOnRedistricting.com and called for all Democratic state legislatures to pursue mid-cycle redistricting
WASHINGTON — Last night, DLCC Board Chair and New York Senate Majority Leader and Speaker Pro Tempore Andrea Stewart-Cousins joined MSNBC’s The Weeknight to discuss how the DLCC’s national strategy to win statehouses across the country will position Democrats to combat the GOP’s unprecedented schemes to redraw maps mid-cycle and protect democracy.
The DLCC recently called on Democrats to use all available state legislative power to pursue mid-cycle redistricting opportunities and launched DemsOnRedistricting.com to fund the fight to defend and create new Democratic majorities in battleground states.

Symone Sanders-Townsend:
- “The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, the DLCC, has been just very clear about what you all believe the strategy forward is. This is what Heather Williams, who is the president of the org, wrote: ‘Republicans are taking a chainsaw to our democracy, and we must meet their might and fight fire with fire. We cannot allow Republicans to turn every state into a Texas gerrymander. Democrats must use and grow the power we have in state legislatures to level the playing field, shape redistricting and protect our democracy.’”
- “I understand that right now, Democratic governors are saying if Texas redistricts, we’re going to redistrict… even though it’s not that easy. So I think the answer is actually to win more seats. That’s because there are thousands of seats up in ’26 and thousands more up in ’27, which will determine the maps for ’30.”
DLCC Board Chair Andrea Stewart-Cousins:
- “We understand that there is a power grab going on… In order to make sure we preserve democracy, if there are opportunities in Democratic-led states… then we say absolutely do it. But we also know there’s a long strategy. There’s a long game, and the long game is making sure we are electing Democratic state legislatures, and that’s what the DLCC has done.”
- “All of us who believe in democracy have to really pay attention to not only the Texas state legislature, [but to] every state legislature. And we’ve got to make sure that the next election cycle and the next election cycle, we are financing those state legislatures who will give us Democratic majorities.”
- “When Democrats are in charge we protect people’s rights. We actually build on the economy. We try and make sure people have health care. We take care of the environment. We protect communities. That’s what we do.”
- “Democrats have won 22 special elections… People are understanding why Democrats should lead. So I’m just saying put the resources in the places where not only are we going to draw maps that make sense, that respect the electorate, but we’re also going to preserve democracy.”
- “We need to educate people and get people to focus on every ballot, certainly this ballot line and every election, because your power is in your hands. And I do want to say that we have a website, DemsOnRedistricting.com, if people want to help us with this fight to take back state legislatures.”
The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) is the campaign arm of Democratic state legislatures and leads the national strategy for building power and winning new majorities. Over the last three decades, we have strategized cycle over cycle to win majorities and lead the effort to bring national attention and investment to our ballot level, winning nearly a dozen new chamber majorities over the last decade. Our work has ensured that nearly half of Americans are represented by at least one Democratic majority in their statehouse. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and have the closest connections to Americans’ day-to-day lives. From protecting fundamental freedoms and voting rights to growing the middle class and advancing opportunity, the DLCC and state legislators are moving the Democratic agenda forward and shaping the future of this country.
