2025 elections in Virginia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, and more will serve as early referendums on the disastrous MAGA agenda and set the tone for the 2026 midterms.
WASHINGTON — Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) President Heather Williams recently joined MeidasTouch and Fast Politics to discuss Democrats’ momentum and key races to watch on Election Day. Next week, voters across Virginia, New Jersey, and more are ready to hold Republicans accountable for their disastrous agenda and elect Democrats to state legislatures who will step up to support working families.

MeidasTouch Podcast:
- “Virginia is such a prime example… of a place where [there is] Medicaid expansion, where there’s tons of veterans and obviously a very large military base. So many of our federal workers who do this work to ensure that we’ve got clean air and clean water and a good environment to raise our families in […] Republicans up and down the ballot are leaving people behind. They’re governing for one small portion of the country.”
- “We see this overperformance in specials in frankly, red states, blue states and purple states. We see candidates that are of their community, not career politicians, that are middle class […] and it is a model for success. We’ve seen three Trump districts flip this year, double-digit Trump districts. We’ve protected five legislative majorities already. We broke the Republican supermajority in Iowa.”
- “We’re [one week] out from an election where we have a pretty interesting map of opportunities in Virginia to protect and build on that majority, to protect that majority in New Jersey, to think about redistricting in the context of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court races, and Prop 50 in California, and to break a supermajority down in Mississippi. So good things are happening at this ballot level.”
Fast Politics Podcast:
- “Democrats who are leading these legislatures move on issues of affordability and costs and those kitchen table issues that voters have been asking elected officials to pay attention to, while also making sure that people can get access to health care and that they’re able to tap into the benefits and services that they may need.”
- “Democrats have power over roughly 50% of the country, in their state capitals. This is not a small number of people. The policies that are being moved forward in these states matter so much… this is where Democrats have power. We sit in the minority federally. We don’t have the presidency. This is where we are getting things done.”
- “[Democrats in state legislatures] are certainly the anchor of the future as we think about how we hold space for voters, for Democrats who are frustrated, who are exhausted, who are scared, [how we] have those real conversations and continue to put one foot in front of the other as we march our way towards progress.”
The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) is the campaign arm of Democratic state legislatures and leads the national strategy for building power and winning new majorities. Over the last three decades, we have strategized cycle over cycle to win majorities and lead the effort to bring national attention and investment to our ballot level, winning nearly a dozen new chamber majorities over the last decade. Our work has ensured that nearly half of Americans are represented by at least one Democratic majority in their statehouse. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and have the closest connections to Americans’ day-to-day lives. From protecting fundamental freedoms and voting rights to growing the middle class and advancing opportunity, the DLCC and state legislators are moving the Democratic agenda forward and shaping the future of this country.
