PA House Speaker Joanna McClinton Joins The Last Word to Discuss Impressive Special Election Wins in PA that Build on State Democrats’ 10-Point Overperformance Streak
WASHINGTON— Last night, Pennsylvania House Speaker Joanna McClinton joined Symone Sanders on MSNBC’s The Last Word to discuss state Democrats’ momentum in special elections in 2025, including two victories in Pennsylvania this week that secured Democrats’ one-seat House majority and a Senate flip in a Trump +15 district. The DLCC has invested in Pennsylvania for decades, and the House is a top battleground on our 2025-2026 target map.
As chaos reigns in Washington, Democrats have winnable and majority-deciding electoral opportunities to fight the MAGA agenda in our state legislative special elections. Democrats are building the foundation of power with five majority-deciding election wins, two red-to-blue flips, and overperformances across the country in special elections.

Check out some key excerpts below:
- Symone Sanders: I’m not joking when I say America’s policy is made in the state legislatures. What Congress sometimes does is they copy off of what’s happened in state legislatures across the country, then they try to nationalize, bring to the federal level, that state legislation.
- Speaker McClinton: I say we are battle-tested, sleeves rolled up, and we are back in the majority…it is our one-seat majority that’s keeping the gavel in my hand and keeping the chaos in Washington D.C. from unfolding in Harrisburg every single day.
- Speaker McClinton: One of the things we passed just this week – and I’m fresh off the road from Harrisburg – is double downing on protecting health care for all those folks who live here in the Commonwealth. We passed four pieces of legislation to protect provisions of the Affordable Care Act into our statewide exchange program.
- Speaker McClinton: When we see what’s happening in D.C., not only are folks falling away from the extreme radicalism, not only are people seeing that our president wants no stability in our nation, but they’re also looking to us under the domes of the smaller state capitals to protect their fundamental freedoms.
- Speaker McClinton: We’ve got to stay faithful. Keep on the fight. Spread the message of the good work we’re doing, and make sure we let folks, even who voted in November for the president, know they can come back on the right side of history and fix the wrongs that are happening every single day with each election.
