Pennsylvania Democrats Ready to Vote for Change
WASHINGTON — With the midterm elections less than 90 days away, Democratic candidates for the Pennsylvania Legislature are showing their commitment to passing policies that matter most to their constituents.
Last week, Pennsylvania’s newest Representative, Helen Tai, introduced a package of gun safety bills that would require gun owners keep firearms away from people who cannot legally possess a gun, securely store firearms when not being used by the owner, and report a lost or stolen gun within 24 hours. Tai was elected to the Pennsylvania state House last May when she flipped her district from red to blue in a critical special election.
Young voter registration has surged by 16 percent in Pennsylvania following the deadly shooting in Parkland, Florida, sending a clear message that Pennsylvania’s youngest voters want more than just thoughts and prayers in the wake of shootings—they want policy and action.
“Pennsylvania state Democrats are connecting with what matters most to their communities and are dedicated to bringing those values to the statehouse,” said DLCC Executive Director Jessica Post. “Rep. Helen Tai has wasted no time working to make Pennsylvania a safer place following her special election win last May. The DLCC looks forward to supporting more Pennsylvania Democrats as they fight to regain seats in both legislative chambers this fall. We’ve named three amazing Pennsylvania women to our list of Spotlight Races, and we are working closely with Pennsylvania Democrats, legislative leaders, and other progressive partners to position Democrats for success in this battleground state.”
The DLCC is featuring Liz Hanbidge, Carolyn Comitta, and Tina Davis on its Spotlight Races page, all of whom were recently endorsed by former President Barack Obama. By electing more Democrats to the legislature this November, Pennsylvanians have a chance to help make real, long-lasting change in their communities and move their state forward on issues like gun safety, equal rights, and access to health care.
The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee is the only organization exclusively committed to electing Democrats to state legislatures all over the country and winning Democratic control of chambers. For over two decades, the DLCC has been working with state legislative leaders to invest strategically in state programs, which has led to Democrats flipping 44 seats since Trump’s inauguration. The DLCC is building on Democrats’ winning momentum and continues to lay the groundwork for substantial gains in 2018 in statehouses nationwide. State Democrats recently scored critical victories in Missouri, Pennsylvania, New York, New Hampshire, Kentucky, Florida, Minnesota, and elsewhere, while also leading the resistance against the Trump administration’s extremist policies.
