WASHINGTON—Tomorrow, two special elections in Michigan will determine the House majority and shape the future of fundamental freedoms. DLCC Spotlight Candidates Peter Herzberg and Mai Xiong are running to defend the Democratic trifecta, which had a banner year of accomplishments in 2023, showing the impact of Democratic power. This election will be a referendum on Democrats’ progress, especially since Herzberg’s anti-abortion opponent, Josh Powell, threatened to take Michigan backward by repealing the state’s abortion protections.
Michigan is a shining example of what Democrats do in leadership:
- Democrats passed both a red flag law and a law to require safe storage of firearms, taking a proactive step to protect their citizens from gun violence.
- Democrats also eliminated asset tests for food aid, which could help over 700,000 Michigan households receiving benefits by eliminating red tape for those in need.
- Legislators also prioritized health care for the most vulnerable by passing a package of legislation aimed at streamlining and expanding access to the state’s Medicaid program.
- Democrats passed a package of reproductive freedom bills known as the Reproductive Health Act.
