These special elections build on the DLCC’s wins in 2025 and defend Democratic state power amid Republicans’ takeover of Washington
WASHINGTON — DLCC Spotlight candidates Dan Cruce and Ray Seigfried just won their special elections for the Delaware Senate, continuing Democrats’ momentum in special elections in 2025. Holding these key seats defends the Democratic firewall in the states as MAGA extremism takes over at the federal level, while also ensuring the Democratic agenda can progress at the state level.
There are no off-years in state legislative elections, and state Democrats have now won six of seven special elections in 2025 so far. An Iowa Democrat recently notched the first flip of the cycle in a Trump +21 district, and Democrats defended one-seat majorities in the Minnesota Senate and Virginia House and Senate. These early special election victories build on the successes the DLCC secured in November’s races, building the case that Democrats’ best path forward is through winning races in the states. There are more majority-making specials on the horizon, and bolstering Democratic power in the states to counter extremism and protect core rights and freedoms is crucial.
Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Heather Williams issued the following statement:
“Democratic power in Delaware is as strong as ever as Sen.-elects Dan Cruce and Ray Seigfried head to Dover to join impactful Democratic majorities. The state legislative level is the strongest hub of Democratic power to move our communities forward against the backdrop of chaos and dysfunction in Washington. Every legislative special election win counts as state Democrats block the extremism of the Trump administration and advance policies that help working families. All eyes should be on the states, and the DLCC will continue engaging in special elections where Democratic power is on the line.”
The DLCC is the official arm of the Democratic Party with the sole mission of building Democratic power in the states and setting the national agenda at the state level. Over the last decade, we have fought cycle-over-cycle to gain a dozen new legislative chamber majorities and we are leading the effort to bring national attention and investment to our ballot level. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and have the closest connections to Americans’ day-to-day lives. From protecting fundamental freedoms and voting rights to growing the middle class, the DLCC and state legislators are moving the Democratic agenda forward and shaping the future of this country.
